Tasmania

A small group of coastal enthusiasts meets occasionally in Hobart to discuss coastal matters statewide and nationally. With members from academic, research and community backgrounds, the spectrum of topics is broad, and the discussions truly stimulating. Late in 2021, ACS Tasmania undertook to prepare a “State of Tasmania’s Coast” report, akin to and aligned with the Federal SOE Report to be published sometime in 2022. Sadly, the Tasmanian Government has failed in its obligation to prepare a State of Tasmania’s Environment Report for more than a decade, with the last Tasmanian SOER published in 2009. Reports were due in 2014 and 2019, but have not been prepared or published. The “State of Tasmania’s Coast” report is near completion, having drawn on expertise in saltmarsh and wetlands, coastal geomorphologists, marine and avian biologists, and legal practitioners. The report is anticipated to be c.10,000 words and it is proposed to be published in a peer-reviewed journal to establish its scientific credibility. A brief synoptic ‘report card’ will be produced, drawing on the results of the project for distribution to the public, land managers and politicians at local and state levels.
