Australian Capital Territory

The ACT branch appointed a new chair, Professor Barbara Norman who is delighted to grow the activities in Canberra over the coming years.

The most significant national event in 2022 was the federal election with an incoming Labor government with a renewed commitment to action on climate change, healthy oceans and protection of the barrier reef.

The ACT Chapter based in Canberra has 2 roles:

  • following events in Jervis Bay as a Commonwealth Territory administered in part, by the ACT, and
  • following significant events at the national level as the national capital. We are also keen to coordinate with our neighbouring NSW branch friends across the border!

The ACT Chapter attracts members from the national agencies and universities and the national science academy (including Future Earth).

An example is the recent Sustainable Oceans and Coasts National Strategy 2021-2030 where a number of ACS members were involved in producing that report.

You can contact Barbara Norman at Barbara.norman@canberra.edu.au.
